    Opinions on large collection.....160 buckles

I have a friend that has been collecting German buckles since he returned from the war. He flew P-51s in Italy. Due to his age, he is now getting rid of a lot of his collections. He has over 160 buckles...everything you can imagine. He would like to sell them and is offering me first choice. My problem is I do not know how to value such a collection and I know that I will probalby keep no more than 10-12 of the buckles and sell the rest. By the way, I asked if that would offend him and he said he was perfectly fine with it. He just does not want to have to sell them individually himself. I am going to try to get some pictures today and will get them posted. Any advice on how to value such a large collection? I know that the best way is to carefully inspect and scrutinize each piece...they range from WWI common buckles to SS officer and everything in between. He of course represents them all as originals. Even if I did detect a reproduction/fake, I would hate to point it out or insult him if he believes otherwise. Is their a good enough market for this type of militaria that I could sell them...assuming they are real and that I can offer them at reasonable prices. I want to be absolutely fair with him yet I do not want to get stuck with a collection that I have limited interest in retaining. Sorry for all the rambling comments and questions. Hopefully I can get some pics posted tonight.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Just to clarify....he wants to sell the entire collection to one person. He does not want to have to do it himself...piece by piece.

I think that it should be possible to sort out all the buckles in a few different defined price range.

Bear in mind that the better and scarcer samples would go first but at the end you will be stucked with common ones, unless you sell them for inexpensive prices. Also, it might take some time to sell them all.

The pictures will say if the lot is interesting or not.

        Hello Kevin,

posting some pics could help to understand what the collection contains and the fair market value.

About sale, as you know Ebay does not allow to auction Nazi buckles, but WWI ones are ok for them.

Keep in mind the e-stand belt buckles section is the best place to meet most of the collectors living in USA and Europe :

Hope that was of some help

Can't wait to see some good photos of what he's offering you.
Does he want you to make an offer or does he have an amount
          already in mind?

Ok...I got about 54 pictures...got some detail shots of the a few of them just to post so you guys can get a feel. I also got a list from the seller that I will scan in as a PDF. I am going to buy the collection and will be selling off most of it. If you are interested in seeing a complete list, please send me a PM with your e-mail address. I will e-mail you the list as a PDF file. I am admittedly a novice...my friend was kind enough to include the display case he had custom built and two reference books....."German Belt Buckles 1845-1945" by Peter Nash and a signed first edition "Belt Buckles & Brocades of the Third Reich" by John R. Angolia. Pictures to follow!

            Thanks,
            Kevin

You will need to put in an album Password of: blue123

Let me know your thoughts on the buckles that have the close up pics of the fronts and backs.

                Regards,
                Kevin

Hi, just out of my own experience buckles are very hard to sell if not unique. I bought a lot of 25 and I think you on a average would get about 40-50% of dealer prices.

So don't pay to much as you will not recover the money

                  Good luck

I now understand why he wants to sell them all together.

A lot of common or poor condition buckles, some fake, only a few keeper.

Berra is right, you should not pay too much...

Theres a good selection of Genuine Buckles in that lot including SS

Maybe several fakes as well but better photos would be needed to confirm.

Any opinions on the SS officers buckle. Hard to tell much from the photo. I have never seen a brass Postschutz so that must be a bad one.

Both the buckles mentioned are repro.
