              Perhaps being submerged under water for a long time? Have seen that "yellowish" residue and corroded "holes" on aluminium boat parts aswell..Any thoughts?

                IMO you are right. I have seen many ground duck aluminium relics with this residue, as you said. The condition of these items depends on soil acidity, wetness and other different factors. The same items look different, if they are dug out in woods (acid soil) or came from fields. Relics in best condition could be found in mud, because it has a great conservation ability and protect those items before oxidation...

                Anyway, I don´t think this buckle was repainted. It´s just her look after being for 70 years in ground with all it´s above mentioned factors. It´s like natural alchemy :-)
