    SA buckle taller eagle?

    Hi all....
I received this early SA buckle and wondered if anyone has insight into the significance of the "tall eagle"(if any). I've noticed most of the eagle's heads are much lower on most other buckles I've seen. Thanks!

    Hello and Welcome to WAF,

You will find three "neck" variations on SA buckles as well as on their 35mm counterparts used by the NSDAP Youth. The one you show is a NSDAP Youth (Hitler Jugend) buckle.

There are long necks where the head of the eagle rises fully above the rope work. Short necks where the head is lower than the rope work and a middle of the road version where it's on the rope.

I don't have my SA photos at hand but will attach some shots of the 35 mm NSDAP buckle to illustrate.

    Regards,
    Stu

        Hello Guys,

Just to add to Stu's accurate description as "NSDAP Jugend" buckle... These 35mm buckles are from the early days before the introduction of the standard Hitler Jugend buckle when the youth movement was under the charge of the SA. This is why they appear like miniature SA buckles and there are lots of variants with these just like their "big brother" SA's. The one other differentiating feature other than the smaller size is the lack of "ears"...the fold over pieces of the box around the pin assembly which are not seen with these 35mm buckles.

Attached here is my example marked for Linden & Funke. I have also included some photos of my standard 45mm size SA buckles that display a higher head/higher standing eagle.

        Best,
        Adam

                    Hi Adam,

Those are some nice buckles you have there.

                    David,

If you are getting into SA buckles you may wish to keep an eye on the Swas types as well. Here's another you might run across.

                    Regards,
                    Stu

                      Hi guys,

Thanks, Stu The last three SA buckles shown in my previous posts are steel/ferrous based which is very unusual and has become something of a sub-focus for me.

A VERY nice buckle that Stu has shown displaying the "upright" swastika type (I believe by Assmann.) I still need an upright swastika example!

Here is one last SA with a rather high eagle. A very unusual looking eagle and a very special design in my eyes.

                      Best,
                      Adam
