Those fakes are trying to reproduce the original by all aspects, by this is just this: a try. This is how they are made: fakers are taking an original which they are removing its original post, postsleeve and prongs. Then they create a mold which will serve to produce the copies. At that point the reproduction will be smaller in size. No longer the overall size (length / width as it was before) but still any element of the design (eagle + motto + swastika ...). Then they add a new set of post, postsleeve and prongs.
The aluminum content is not the same, the aluminum surface is not the same (since original were die stuck and fakes are cast it is expected and absolutely normal), and other components (post, postsleeve, prongs) are not the same.
Now that you have the basics, I will invite you to find photos of originals and photos of the reproduction. This forum is loaded with both. Then compare both side by side. Any difference YOU will find will be YOUR tool. But take the EXACT same copie (aka original 36/39 compared to a fake 36/39 - and not comparing an original 36/40 with a fake 36/38). Once you find such difference(s) get other buckles and check again if what you spot first is still valid with the new ones.
Last, but not least, do not come in a public forum to write what were all the differences you saw since, believe it or not, soon or late someone will use your information(s) to improve the quality of the fakes.
