Hessen
Marc
I agree with you absolutely and hence the question.
Again and without wishing to go around in ever decreasing circles, the attached is being advertised as Hessen BDM.

Hi all,
The dealer's description is, I think a website error (wrong picture-link up), but the buckle isn't even German, let alone Hessian. This style of crown (proper to some East European army) is quite different from the Drand Ducal Hessian crown, even though sellers on German ebay never cease to describe it as such.
Regards,
Karl

Hessian Buckle
Thanks Karl
As having been earlier admitted, "Imperial" is not my collecting area and it was the BDM connection that was potentially interesting.
The buckle image that I attached is actually shown in full (colour obverse and reverse) on page 84 of the latest buckle reference and titled "Scarce one piece Hessian buckle post 1895".

David

Hi Renfield,
Some comments I believe have been made about the "latest book" in this forum, and I am sure they are correct, but since I heeded a good friend's advice I can't comment from first-hand experience as I didn't buy it. But just look at the crown on Marc's beautiful buckle (correct Hessen) and the difference becomes apparent :-))
Regards,
Karl

Hessen belt buckle
Good evening Karl
I totally agree that the crowns in question are like "chalk and cheese" and the detail by the buckle and towards which Marc posted, has no real comparison to the one that I flung up, although there are similar features.
Buy the book !
My original query was Hessen BDM.
Two points :-
Can BDM mean anything in German other than Madelbund in der Hitler-Jugend ? Any Imperial association ?
The dealer who refers to this style of buckle as Hessen BDM has two on the particular web site described as such and surely, not a typing mistake. In addition, a dealer who I regard as premier and also, the only dealer that I know who has described the "NSFK" box buckle as War Orphans - does know his belt buckles (in my opinion and without prejudice).

David

David, Karl, all,
Someone should ask the dealer about the abbreviation BDM. It is strange indeed that they would make the mistake twice.
As for the buckle in the "New book"??? You all know my opinion on this book!!
A pré 1895 buckle has to be 50m/m and I would like to see my first 50m/m buckle with what looks like electrically welded "Feet" catch. The catches of pré 1900 buckles are always "U" style catches until 1915 when the steel buckles where introduced. Feet catches on brass buckles are unusual. As for the steel prong-sleeve and prongs!!! same coment! Since when do the pré 1895 buckles have steel prongs and prongs sleeves. This buckle is yet another mistake in the book. It is NOT Hessen and NOT pré 1895.
I’m sorry to me so affirmative but the crown on that buckle looks more like a Belgian "King" crown than a Hessen one. I have about 50 variations of the Hessen buckle in my collection and never the crown is like this. Pictures will follow upon my return from the SOS if this subject interests the members of this forum.
