Looks like a bad molding.... what is the material of the roundel ? Really, I don’t have a good feeling about this buckle...

        Hi Marc,

it is a lead alloy. Don´t know if this is good or bad. The buckle is definitely very old and used. The shield is a little loose and the repair keeps it it in place, there is also a thick oxide layer between the shield and the box. Also the name-scratching is highly oxidized. I would be surprised if this one is a fake, but who knows. Got it for free with a lot of other stuff from the guy, which is all original.

Thanks you all for your opinion, really really appreciated.

        Regards,

        Daniel

From looking at the side photos of the face-plate it looks like there is another face plate underneath the top one. Just MO but worth looking closer. I agree with Marc that it is most likely bad.In any event an iteresting buckle.

                Here we go:

I manipulated on the screws a bit and the whole thing came loose. There is no other roundel under the actual one, just a thick layer of oxide and verdigris. And this is noticeable on roundel and box, so this must have been on there for decades. The loose roundel doesn´t look like anything Germany had produced during that time, but it surely is very, a very old copy. Look at the screws, totally full of oxidized remnants.

Must be a really old copy, but definitely not good...

                Regards,

                Daniel

                                Daniel,

thanks for the addtional photos. All I can say is "WOW" someone went to a lot of trouble to make this buckle. One can speculate forever as to when, who and why. Are you absolutely sure rthe face plate is lead. It certainly does look it from the photos.
