I understand the theory about post war but why would they make this type of buckle post war. I assume we know this buckle was never used by the Germans East or West so why take the time and effort in making a penal buckle when I guess it could have been just as easy to make post war heer or any other 3rd reich buckle? Could it have been the post war laws regarding the swaz and eagle?

I hope this makes sense...just throwing it out there.

Well i do not know if it's Post War or not I obtained mine out of a footlocker that belonged to my Grandmothers Brother who fought in WW2 and picked up alot of items that started me collecting. It was wrapped up with 9 others which I sold off over the years. Now he was still stationed in Germany until around 1947 so I can not say when they were obtained, maybe something made and never issued, who knows i just know what i was told they were back then.

This buckle is definitely; with no discussion a post wars re-strike of a WH buckle.
These buckles where for the first time sowed and mentioned by Angolia as penal battalion just to make some $$$
The whole thing is a 100% set up!!!!
Just look at a B&N 43 WH buckle and all is clear. The factory just used the original dies, took away the WH symbol, replaced it by the pebbled inset and did take off the date. !!
I visited German buckles factory’s and know how these things where done!!!!
There exist lots of other such post war buckles.
They used to be seen often in shows but are diapering slowly.
            A few other examples are:
The so-called mountain troops WH buckle. An edelweiss flower stamped over a WH eagle.
The SS Japanese sun buckle. A post-RZM SS buckle made by Overhoff in 1945 and where the SS inset has been cut out to be replaced with a Japanese type razing sun...
A LW buckle with the Edelweiss flower, or with the LW inset cut out and replaced by a neutral inset.

If you ever saw "The Eagle has Landed" Stiener and his men were aprt of a Penal unit.

              Joe...
One of the points of collecting is also knowing history...
Hollywood movies are nice, one can escape a few hours from reality.... be brain-dead... but they are what they are ... a Movie... not history or reality...
Penal battalions where used to clean up mines, unexploded bombs, clean up the mess and body’s of the Hamburg, Dresden, and Bremen destructions... And they where not created in 1943....
NOT, NEVER, for a military action and certainly unthinkably into enemy territory... They where BAD soldiers, cowards, etc. they would have surrendered by arrival to escape the Germans....
If they had a non-army related buckle, it was the neutral flat buckle.

Please read the book of Sven Hassel Legion of the Damned
              <O></O>
Murderers and sadists where chosen for the Dillewager unit and other units (36 SS div. 500 th Paratrooper, Unit. 999 from the WH...) specialized in murder Jews, Russians, Partisans, and Poles.... And they had full SS uniform with SS runes or the famous Dillewager collars and regular SS buckles.
Such units where also called the Sonderabteilung.... real sadists and murderers with a very own (And super scarce) buckle.
              <O></O>
I could write a few pages, but this is not the point.

The Penal buckle is a POST WAR buckle made with a 1943 dies....
