shiny green colour Rodo ss buckle

I've got a question about the green paint of an SS rodo buckle.

The outside of the buckle has about 90% of his rodo green paint.

The inside has about 95% of green paint. The paint on the outside of the buckle is a bit shiny in comparison to the matt green paint on the inside.

How is this possibe? the buckle isn't repainted. Is it possible that the previous owner used some oil/wax to clean the buckle? Or can it be done by the soldier himself? A waffen-SS vet told me that they had to clean there buckle too when had to do a parade.

Good question. My Rodo has the same color front and back. My best guess would be polish or some sort of protective coating.

Cleaning does not mean polishing or waxing. Such action(s) will remove the paint more than anything else. If done over silver paint, it would be the perfect way to end up with an unpainted buckle showing only primer!

Anyway it is a common feature with the green paint, not restricted to RODO's. You can find the same feature with green Assmann 155/43's.

I went yesterday to the vet for a visit and I asked him again.

He used a kind of soap ?!? to clean his buckle. Then I asked him if the silver paint didn't disappear so that only the primer was visible. But his buckle was made of aluminium and was never painted.

Cleaning of the buckle was only done during training and never at the front he told me.

I have four aluminium buckles and two of them have no single spot of paint, even the inside of the buckle has no traces of paint. I can only assume that they were never painted.

Very interesting. It is indeed true that soap does not alter paint at all and would be ideal for a spot free uniform inspection without damaging anything. Polishes and waxes on the other end are very aggressive and any collectors having used them should certainly remember this!
When did your vet had his training in the W-SS? SS aluminum buckles were all painted dull silver (or sometimes green) when leaving the factory (to follow regulation) but did not retain well their coat of paint. So maybe it is where they ended after becoming too shinny for combat purpose? Buckles had a minimum of service before been discarded (cannot remember if it was 4 or 8 years). Could be a possibility. he did his training in July 1943 in Breslau in Poland. It was near Tiergarten. A lot of Flemish volunteers were trained there. Below a picture of the veteran on the bridge of Breslau during carnival. He is dressed as Winston Churchill...
