Yes I was mistaken and you are correct. The catch is attached to the same piece as the rest of the buckle. Is this stamped?

Thanks Jan. I guess mine is just weaker. As John mentioned, the dies got worn. I wish we could figure out the dates of manufacture of these. '43 or '44 would be my guess.
