    Police buckle needing identification

Does anyone know exactly was this buckle is ?

References differ by opinion, although the general concensus is Landespolizei (rural), although "Gendarmerie" is also refered to.

Also, what is the significance of gilt over nickle silver?

Other ranks dress or special occassions, or leader rank?

    Any comments would be appreciated.

    Regards,

    David

    Hi David,

My references have this listed as "rural" and the gilt indicates "high rank".

      Hello Keifer

      Thankyou for your comments.

Why is there a post script "It must be genuine, I paid a lot of money" ?

      Regards,

      David

David, no new information regarding this buckle.

But I don't like the translation of Angolia. I think 'rural' is wrong.
'State'-police, or maybe country-police would fit better.

I'm sure Schleppfux can give the 100% correct answer.

Still confused as to who exactly wore this buckle and actually, the reason for starting the post. The term "Gendarmerie" has been mentioned, however who were the rural police and who were the gendarmerie?

            Regards,

            David

              Hi all,

Actually I think no-one ever wore this buckle. It seems a US collecor found some boxes of these buckles at the Assmann firm in the 50ies or 60ies and brought them to the US.The only reference for "Landespolizei" that we have is from the Assmann catalogue. As the name says, "Landespolizei" means a garisonned, central police force coming directly under the control of a Land. When Prussian Minister of the Interior, Göring founded such a troupe, which was dissolved in 1935 by being incorporated into the Wehrmacht. There are some references to a special uniform for the Landespolizei in "Ministerialblatt für die Innere Verwaltung", including a new belt buckle. Unfortunately, no more details are given in that publication. I believe that the buckle, although intended for the Prussian Landespolizei and production by the Assmann firm having started, was never issued as by that time the incorporation into the Wehrmacht had been decided or already been carried out.

Anyway, "rural police" is not a correct translation for "Landespolizei". Rural Police could be "Kommunal-" or "Gemeindepolizei", linguistically also "Landpolizei" could be possible. These mean police of small towns or villages, and is the exact of opposite of Landespolizei, which was the central police force of a Land, which might roughly be compared to a state in the US.

              Kind regards,

              Schleppfux
