    SS 36/40 Real of Fake?

    Hi All,
This buckle was the very first SS buckle that I added to my collection some time ago. I have a few reference books and have followed up other data regarding fakes and now have doubts regarding the authenticity of this particular buckle. Could I please have some feedback to help me determine whether this is a fake or not.

    Many thanks,
    Fergus.

        Hello Fergus,

I'm sorry to confirm your doubts : the buckle is a molded repro

Indeed fake. You will not find any information about those in books (yet).

To confirm by yourself just take measurements:
Original 36/40 Type 2 (what the above duplicates) are:
          Length: 64.76 mm / 2.535 inches
          Width: 48.34 mm / 1.890 inches

          Fake:
Length: 62.14 mm / 2.475 inches (or anything less than 64 mm)
          Width: 46.82 mm / 1.859 inches

Does not matter since it is a fake also.
Checking the link, noticed another poor guy wasted $300 USD

looks indeed like the same buckle, not only the same type fake. the "dirt"on the left side...I have one of these in my fake collection, too. mine was heavy aged.... and I didn't realize the smaller size, as I was soooo happy to find a "cheap" ss alu buckle... sometimes I just want to kick it into the trash....but fooling other people - no way !

This is the first time I have seen these recent comments regarding this fake buckle. I have sent an e-mail to Ric regarding this matter. I was contacted just after I originally posted this subject matter/photos, by a member about selling him the buckle in question, I sold this moulded repro buckle to him as a FAKE for $60.00, he said he was going to add it to his fake collection! I truly hope that this fake has not been passed on to somebody as a genuine buckle! I clicked on the ebay link supplied by Voodoo and the address supplied by the seller is the same address as the one I posted the fake buckle to! Can anyone tell me if the photo that Voodo posted is the photo of the buckle that was auctioned on this particular ebay link? Any further help regarding this matter would be welcome.
                      Many thanks,
                      Fergus.

                        Fergus,

in my opinion the 2 obverse images (yours and Voodoo's) are showing the same buckle.

So do I. But we all know it will ... unfortunately

This is why I do not sell any fake I used for my work to anybody ... even if I paid up to $400 USD for some (who said "learning by his/her mistakes"? )

                            Fergus,

This is the photo supplied to me by the seller of the buckle. I have others of the back, etc. When the auction ended I did contact the buyer and directed him to this thread. Hopefully no payment was sent.

Many thanks for all the replies that I have received regarding this matter. To say I am disappointed in this person that bought this buckle and now has tried to sell it on as an original is an understatement. I enjoy the hobby of buckle collecting and I do not enjoy being ripped off and would never knowingly sell anything to anybody if i was in doubt of its originality! This is the first and last repro buckle that I will sell to anybody and I just hope that as my own collection grows i do not encounter any more fakes, but if I do, they will remain with me as a reminder to be more careful and if the information is not already posted on this forum, all can be assured that I will post any info regarding any possible fakes in order to help other collectors in the future.
                              Many thanks,
                              Fergus.
