there are a few different assmann / Overhoff double marked HJ buckles that I am farmiliar with..I recieved a new one i n the mail today and upon comparison, I have found that each of my buckles which are both marked " A A&S GES GESCH OVERHOFF & CIE " have different eagles..one buckle has an obvious Assmann eagle and the other is an obviously Overhoff eagle. Both of the buckles are of diffrent width and have different fold over ears and prong shapes... when these buckles are compared to single stamped buckles by Assmann , and a single stamped buckle by Overhoff; they are a complete match.. In my mind , this tells me that both firms were manufacturing buckles marked with both manufacturers names!! I have always questioned what the relationship was between the two companys...was one a wholesaler and one a manufacturer?? it is now my opinion that both were manufacturing...please see the attaached pics and please give me your thoughts.>Chad

That's awesome Chad....what a great thing to discover. I know what you mean about the relationship between these two makers. This certainly seems to show that they both in fact were working together both as manufacturers....Still a strange relationship if they were both making the same buckles (not splitting it up where one might make the box and the other the prongs and prong bar). I'm wondering just how long this "relationship" lasted between these two companies given they were both some of the "big wig" buckle manufacturing companies.
Thanks for the comparison shots....they are awesome!
Cheers!

Chad,
A very, very interesting observation! Definitely a good topic for discussion that warrants further investigation. Definitely akin to "which came first the chicken or the egg" discussion. One might be able to draw a better conclusion if both buckles were similar and that being perhaps there was a pact that one produced the buckle while the other the roller bar/prong/catch assemblies.
As these markings are on only select few buckles, I would suggest that this was performed only during specific time frames - what those time frames would be is anyone's guess. There is no doubt there was some sort of working collaboration between the two firms but what governed the agreement and why is a baffler.
