any thoughts on this buckle quality looks good but am very naive when it comes to buckles .didnt cost me anything so if its bad then no loss

Sorry to advise that this buckle is a fake. Actually, a fantasy item, as the original NS Studentenbund buckle is not documented as ever being made in steel. When compared to an original in die struck aluminium, the detail on the one that you have posted (as a first generation fake/fantasy) is and with all due respect, somewhat poor and indistinct.

Try a search on the forum to isolate past threads which detail this buckle.
