    Polizei beltbuckles during Weimar

    Hi everyone,

    Sorry if it is a stupid question, but belt buckles are not my field of collecting.
    In fact, I was wondering how the Polizei belt buckles were during the Weimar Republic period. I can´t remember to have seen one labeled as such.

    As I am planning to finnish a Luger rig from this period, I was wondering how they are and if they are difficult items to find.

    Hi Douglas, I will answer your question for you but I was hoping one of the guys that collect Police buckles would do it, I normally collect Heer buckles. The book answer is between 1919 -1934 the Weimar Poilce buckle was used. I have not got one myself but I have used a picture from Sven Jankes website to show you an example. (sorry Sven, hope you dont mind ) Then from 1934-36 the Landespolizei buckle was used. This was an eagle holding a Swastika very similar to an SS eagle until the introduction of the familiar police buckle that we all know. Hopefully if others read this they might have and post a picture of a Landespolizei buckle for you or fill in any gaps that I have omitted. Hope this helps

        The buckle that Ben shows is a Prussian Polizei buckle from the time of the Weimar Republic. Each state had its own police buckle. You should be aware that there is a later version of this Prussian Police nickeled box buckle with the "flying" eagle that is round. There is also an earlier version of this Prussian Police box buckle with an eagle with a straight on view (not flying).

        So, if you have a Prussian Police marked luger you need to determine the proper time period of the pistol to figure out which buckle you need. If you have a Saxon Police marked luger you will need an entirely different buckle, etc. Remember that the German Police were not natiionalized until 1936 so there were various police buckles (and uniforms) from states such as Baden, Bavaria, Hesse, etc. up to that time.

          What is this buckle then if the one that I have shown is a Prussian Police buckle? Sorry about the pic guys, had to scan it from a book I always thought this was a Prussian Police buckle?

            The buckle you now show is the earlier style Prussian Police buckle that I mentioned as having an eagle with a straight on view. That is to say, this buckle preceeded the Prussian Police buckle with the "flying eagle" that you first showed. There is yet another Prussian Police buckle with the flying eagle that is round. It all depends upon the time period but there were three different Polizei buckles worn in Prussia between 1919-1936.

            BTW, the Landespolizei buckle that you mentioned may never have been issued or worn (although there are certainly originals that are of the period examples). The specific police buckle that Douglas needs depends entirely upon the markings on his pistol.

                  Here are images in relation to the three types of Prussian police buckles, posted on behalf of Bill (buckle1).

                  All in chronological order.

                  Worthy of note though is (a) the two differing eagle sizes and designs in relation to the "first" pattern and (b), the inclusion of the ultra rare "rural" (brass) "second" pattern.

                  The final pattern of course, not being exclusive to wear by Officers.
