    Assmann or Overhoff?

This is something of an "old chestnut", however I wonder why we sometimes encounter early HJ buckles, displaying the marks of both Assmann and Overhoff?

My own thoughts have always been that at one period, Assmann had a very strong control in connection with the production of the lucrative HJ buckle. As such, made by Assmann, although bought in, additionally stamped (or custom stamped by Assmann) and distributed by Overhoff.

    Any thoughts?

    Regards,

    David

              David,

Very rare bird in my estimation and not regularly seen on today's circuit. Your reference to whom the manufacturer truely belongs to reminds me of a similar old age question, "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" But as you have alluded to, I also believe that the contract was awarded to Assmann and he in turn sub-contracted out to O&C with the agreement to have both stamps present. Just a theory.

              Regards,
              Dan

                Hello David

Just a suggestion: There is a possibility that Assmann and Overhoff have worked together in a joint venture. This is in Germany a liked way to get a strong position on the market. Maybe they have found together capabilities to reduce the production costs. This theory is supported by the observation, that the markings of each firm were stamped in rather the same size.

                Regards,
                Guido

There is of course a high degree of speculation here.

I really do not know and instead, I have already put forward my suggestion and which is without foundation.

There is still a tad degree of non comfort by myself that two of the "giants" would cooperate on this massively lucrative and profitable buckle. I still think that "Fritz" Assmann was the organ grinder and Overhoff, was the monkey.

                  Regards,

                  David

Thankyou for posting the double marked HJ buckle.

It looks as though I may shortly, be eating a very large portion of "humble pie".

Do you think that the claw arrangement to your HJ and an Overhoff marked set that I hold, look jolly similar ?

Tool marks to the shroud, shape and dimensions to the claws and especially, the claw tips !

                      Regards,

                      David

One thing is for certain... the prongs on P38's buckle match the prongs on early O&C SS buckles... looks like Overhoff may have been the manufacturer. Also, to me, it seems that the O&C markings are where they should be on an Overhoff buckle and the Assman markings have been added above, otherwise they would have been spaced a little bit better. Just my opinion of course...
