HJ officer koppelschloss - which material?

I have to clean this nice koppelschloss, but first step would be to correctly id what is made of. Any idea also on how to clean it? I really love it, although its in dug conditions.

please don't tell me to use EDTA unless you're prepared to buy it for me I cannot get it here

    hello

it seems that it is made of zinc,

i think the safe method of cleaning this one is to use white vaseline. just apply lot of vaseline on buckle and leave it for 4 or 5 days. than You can remove vaseline with cloth. use this function several times to have nice effect. after activity with vaseline You can use brass brush to remove remaining dirt(but be careful, not to hard).

    regards
    Piotr

      hello Piotr,

it is currently in a bath of vaseline oil, like i normally do for coins and buttons i dug. I also thought it could be zinc, i will keep it there for a week and then try to smoothly clean it with mini drill + brass brush at lowest speed.
      Thanks
