    Hi all,

    This just arrived in the mail yesterday. The buckle is also referenced as belonging to the DGzRS, the "Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbr******252;chiger" (German society for the rescue of the shipwrecked) in at least one reference, but I believe this to be more properly the buckle of a Feuerwehr-Sanit******228;ter (fire brigade medical orderly or paramedic).

    Here's the obverse.

      And, finally, here's a close-up of a page on Feuerwehr insignia etc. from a Steinhauer catalogue, unfortunately undated. The drawing does look like my buckle, doesn't it?

      I'd be most interested in seeing any other buckles of this type members might like to share.

        An excellent and most unusual buckle.

        Perhaps one in the past where possibly, an element of confusion reigned as to exactly what it was. There is the description in black and white ! A St u L stamping to a buckle, being supported by an illustration within a St u L catalogue - great !

        Is the only visible means of support to the roundel by the soldered split pin, or has the rim of the roundel been additionally silver soldered to the brass box ?

          There's no additional soldering to the roundel. I have been wondering why they did it this way, but the patina is even and consistent throughout, and any remaining doubts I had were dispelled once I had it in my hands.

            Super buckle and nicely supported by the S&L catalog picture. I have to say this is the first one of these I have ever seen. Great find.

              Perhaps I owe you an apology, as I did not intend to question the integrity of your buckle - one iota !

              I just wondered if the split pin device was the only method of affixing the roundel, or whether at the St. u L. factory, it had been additionally silver soldered.

              Obviously not.

              How odd though that even less than a year ago, I would have treated single solder spot and split pin fixings with great suspicion and now, realise that for certain buckles, it is normal, usual and par for the course.

                Certainly no apology is called for. I, too, tread wearily where those pin attachments are concerned. But as you say, obviously par for the course more often than one could have imagined some time ago!
