HJ buckles in stamped zinc

Dear all,

As suggested by Chad in his thread on molded zinc HJ buckles, I am starting this thread on the stamped zinc variation.

To kick off, here's the quite well known Klein & Quenzer buckle mysteriously marked with their M5/276, although K&Q did have a M4 registration...

thank you for starting this new thread these buckles are beautiful! I have an example of the M4/118 but have always been a day late on the M5/276 buckle I bought my first M4//118 I didnt even notice till I got home that it was a stamped buckle because I only bought it for the makers mark and didnt even look at the detail to the back .. So I was pleasantly surprised to say the least.. these are the only two makers I know of, are you aware of others??? Chad

No, I'm not, but surely, there should be others? As you said in your thread on the molded zinc buckles, probably most people don't think about these a lot. So if everybody had another look at their stamped HJ buckles, who knows what might turn up?

Hi all,

I beg forgiveness for bringing this one up again, but I'm quite sure there must be stamped zinc HJ around made by other manufacturers than the two shown.

It's quite easy to identify them when handling your buckles: if it's heavier than your standard alu buckle, and has the intaglio impression of the roundel on the reverse, chances are it's stamped zinc!

Please have a look at your collection, as this could be quite important!

Glad you brought this topic up as I have a HJ buckle that I could not detemrine exactly it's metal origin. I think it is to light for steel and heavier for an alum, possible nickle??? The only other thought I had was to post here and perhaps it could be a stamped zinc you were dicussing here. I will post the photos and let you determine.

Hi Dan,

Many thanks for showing your buckle, which is a very nice one. I have the same one, and mine's steel. Try holding a magnet to yours. A magnet is often the only way to determine the base metal with the HJs, especially the early nickle-coated ones.
