    Does A & S Assmann exist afterall?

    Hello,
A while ago I posted a buckle, marked A & S and the A of Assmann. Several people told me that the marking was a fantasy marking.

Now A friend of mine sendet me this scan from a book. (I asked him wich book )

I'm very confused. Does the marking A& S and A existed or not

    Greetings,
    Frank

      Hello,
      Thank s a lot!

Than I only don't understand why nobody corrected a member in a prior thread of mine , when he stated: " and in this case, a spurious or fantasy stamping in situ to suggest "Assmann". ""

And the response " .... is 100% correct. That A&S mark can be found on other buckles too. "

Sometimes I don't understand some "experts".

The "expert" that you have referred to, complete with the frowning smiley, is obviously myself.

I think that it would have been in the best interest of the forum if you had provided a link to the past thread.

        Here is a fragment:-

It would be silly to engage in verbal acrobatics here, although I think and with all due respect, you have misunderstood me somewhat.

Of course the A A & S (stamped) marking existed and it always seen on the LaPo buckle and furthermore, some early HJ's.

This is an early and well documented Assmann mark.

Persons who are faking (in painted steel) certain buckles, have seen fit to stamp a very similar mark and this is regularly encountered on fake DAF-Werkschar, SS and Wehrmacht buckles.

In my opinion as a collector and not an expert, this particular mark on these particular buckles, never existed. Furthermore, the fakers have not even bothered to faithfully reproduce the logo per se. Instead, it is a clumsy and painfully horrible interpretation.

I hope that this clarifies the situation.

        Regards,

        David

          Hello,

That's a clear photo to compare them.

I see now that your reply can be interpreted in 2 ways, althought the word "fantasy" isn't very clear. That word IMO indicates that the entire marking never existed. I already didn't mention your Name, because I didn't blamed you. I only hadn't understood why no person had corrected your statement. Now I see why.

I was very confused because I told a friend of mine that his Heer buckle was a replica because of the marking.

I do believe , when I see your photo that it was the first marking so perhaps I was right afterall.

Thanks for the great explanation. I'm glad we've cleared this out .

          Greetings,
          Frank

I’m adding a small detail here, this marking has NEVER, EVER, existed on a SS buckle. But fakes SS buckles bearing this marking are around.

What book did the scan come from? I'm sure it has more interesting marks we would like to see, ie. "G" and "W" come to mind.
