Tropical LW buckle

Most of the LW tan buckles are marked N&H 1942, all are factory tan painted.

IMO yours seems to be overpainted, and the design of the eagle reminds me of Assmann's one. However is the buckle good.
A very few blue buckles were tan period overpainted but I don't think it is the case here.

Looks to me like the paint was added later.....looks like what appears to be brush strokes on the buckle. Seems most apparent at lower left hand side of the front of the buckle....

There's not much doubt the buckle was overpainted. I just wondered if soldiers also did this in the field like helmets.

Not common

It is very unlikely to be the case for belt buckles.

Hi John,

I agree with Simon. Some Luft blue/grey buckles were field camo'ed tan. Here is one of Bob Lyon's that was painted in this way. Yours however is not the usual color of Luft. field applied camo paint as Bob's is, but appears to have been "touched up" in the original factory color. Makes me wonder if someone has tried to "restore" the buckle.

I agree the one in question has been post war touched up. The one that John osted (Bob L's) is one of the only field painted ones I have ever seen that looked convincing.

While N&H 1942 dated buckles are the most common Luft tropical ones, there are at least two other makers as well. Will have to check mine to recall the makers.

Here is a textbook N&H 1942 (with leather tab),which picked up today at a show in a trade, for comparison.
