It's a kind of protection laquer against rusting IMO,it's not paint..

Jos...its a laquer over paint if it is not paint alone because the base metal on this assembly is steel and I can not see steel being brown, John

It's hard to say what it is,John..
It looks like a kind of nail polish/laquerish stuff...,I can't name it actually..
              Glossy Pink/purple/brown I'd say..

                Hello there,

I have had several of the unissued JFS Kriegsmarine buckles and they all have this common brown trait on the prongs.

The brown prongs are common on the dark blue late war "wehrmacht" JFS marked buckles... the earlier army green JFS buckles do not have the brown prongs. Do a quick search in the buckles section "JFS".

If this is in fact a KM buckle (I'd rather keep that discussion off the thread - since its on every other black/blue buckle called a KM has it) perhaps the brown 'laquer' is used to protect the prong unit from salt water? Yes that was a huge stab in the dark, but I wouldn't want my prongs to rust together!

NOT only KM buckle; it simply late war buckle in typical late war color ( the same as late war pebbled uniform buttons made of steel which were used by both Heer and Luftwaffe ) ; they were used by both Heer and KM.

Looks like a thin coat of red oxide paint from these pictures.

Yeah, why I said "Wehrmacht". The salt water thing was my late night brain wondering.
