          Paranoia ?

          Hello Jacob,

Your buckle is undoubtly a nice original worn SS aluminium buckle.
In the last weeks, about 4 members asked opinion on buckles almost like yours, where there is absolutely no controversy.
I think the numerous fakes on the market develop a paranoia on the german belt buckles collectors ...

Yes, maybe its paranoia.. I saw a SS buckle a couple off weeks ago with the same maker as this one, i would have bought it in a secon with out a doubt, but it turned out to be a copy.

A fake 36/40, recently and openly advertised for sale within one of the German auction sites, as a fake.

              Regards,

              David

Hi David, for the uneducated, can you breakdown and point out the bits that tell you why it is a fake? Call it a tuition session

                    Many thanks

                    Ben

Absolutely not agree : the SS buckle presented by Jacob is a fake molded from an original one

                      Regards

Indeed. It is just an East European reproduction and not even one of the latest.

Jacob...note how your buckle has an unsmooth finish if you look closely...this is one of the signs...on the newer fakes this may have been corrected, as JP says the fakers really put a lot of effort into improving these items.

I actually think that the two SS buckles here would baffle the majority of us and are "good" by say a casual glance. If buying from a remote site and having to rely on the sellers photographic technique, coupled with the colour balance of our monitors, then the problems are compounded.

Nothing replaces having the buckle in your hands.

I hope that Jean-Pierre will correct me if necessary on the following points.

This is a prolific fake, originally emanating from the Czech Republic and now, probably coming in from either Russia or Hungary. The buckle has evolved by ever upgrading quality and this makes matters worse, by trying to compare one fake with another.

A common feature though is that the buckle is cast.

I now have the opinion that there is no such thing as a stamped aluminium fake and that all (not just SS) and without exception, are increasingly better quality cast. Whether the cast technique is by the lost wax, sand, investment, die, centrifugal et al., I really do not know (or care for that matter).

The moulds have been formed from crisp originals and whether the fakers like it or not, there is a metallurgical problem that they cannot overcome. Metal is less dense as a liquid than a solid and with a casting shrinking, as it cools.

Jean-Pierre has undertaken extensive research in relation to the dimensions of the originals to the fakes, although the differences are within the banding of 0.01 > 0.06 of an inch !!

Difficult to determine if buying on line and I for one, are not in the habit of carrying a precision measuring kit at fairs.

I have put together a photo merge of the buckle that Jacob posted, together with the one that I submitted as a known and declared fake. The boxes are like two peas in a pod and it is worth scrutinising the reverse in particular for common features.

The fakes have gradually upgraded and it is interesting to note the pin shroud on the photo merge. Jacobs has been cast and the seam is an imitation, whilst the one that I showed, has a genuine seam. All part of the upgrade, although I suspect that the casting techniques have become better also.

As John has mentioned, the finish is still not as good as that anticipated for a die stamped aluminium, irrespective of genuine or simulated wear. Also, this metal should be "white" and in my opinion, there is still a slight grey hue.

Attached is a SHD that I have and which I now feel is a fake. I do not think that anyone can argue with the detail, although the colour is wrong and also, there are distinct obverse defects, indicative of casting.

                            Regards,

                            David
