    Lufteshutz Buckle

Hello all yet again. I have been trying to determine the maker of this Lufteshutz buckle that I have. I thought it was a Assmann one due to the curve of the prongs. However David North thinks it could be a GB and advised me to show it on the forum and get opinions. I have examined the buckle with a spy glass and cannot find any hint of a makers mark, even hidden under the paint. Your comments would be appreciated.

Many thanks and a happy New Year to all

I think Gustav brehmer is a good bet. Also, I don't think there are too many makers or known makers of this buckle. Many are left unmarked. The only other maker mark I've seen is RS&S, but my experience is limited to.

Many thanks Steve, thats two people who think GB is the maker. The only thing is GB normaly put on threi GB logo and year but I suppose they could have left some unmarked.

Although I have never seen anything but RSS and GB steel Luftschutz buckles, this one looks like Assmann to me, what with the bent prongs and brazed catch -- just like an Assmann 155/40 SS buckle.
          Any other opinions out there?

Thanks for the info Kevin, is a brazed catch common to Assmann or do other makers use this method also?

            thanks

Apologies for being a tad pedantic here and yes, I know that the buckle has Luftschutz emblazoned upon it !

Correctly, it is SHD, as Sicherheits und Hilfs-Dienst.

Odd that the two makers seen time and time again are GB and R S & S. Why not other manufacturers and to include Assmann or Overhoff ?

The one posted does seem to fall within a rock and hard place, although on reflection, I am no longer confident that it is one by Gustav Brehmer.

I do not have enough experience with Assmann SS buckles in steel in order that a direct comparison can be made. Also, I tend to think of the Assmann "kink" claws as aluminium with a quite defined crease. There have always been pre war and war time buckles with slight curves to the claws and to include those, which are definitely not by F W A u. S.

              Interesting buckle though.

              Regards,

              David

Many thanks David, for your response, if you were to make an educated guess, which maker would you go for?

                  Ben

I thought that your buckle was a GB manufacturing variation, although the "ears" to the box are the real puzzle and which are totally different from the usual Brehmer logo/date stamped, SHD.

Steel SS buckles are not my forte, however I must agree with Kevin, that your SHD and generally by the catch and pin shroud/claws, does have a whiff of the Assmann 40 SS.

My uneducated guess is, er.......Assmann and quite simply, I have never seen one before.

                  Regards,

                  David
