I have never head dates associated with both types of army buckles (pebbled and painted steel). Are the pebbled buckles early/pre-war and the steel wartime? I'm aware both were used during the war.

Yes, the aluminium buckles are pre war ( 1936 - 1940 ) the steel ones are 1940 up to the end. Both where of course used during the war. (as where the Wheimar buckles in some cases)

Yes, in 1940 aluminium was retricted to be used only for wapons and especialy planes. Nickel had alredy been taken out of the buckle production in 36.
