    Turnerbund - revisited

Whether we love them or hate them, the Turnerbund or FFFF buckle is with us.

Here are two towards which I would dearly like some comments and with no punches pulled.

I never thought that I would ever endorse or support a single solder spot buckle, although the first one displays such an attachment method. The buckle (obverse only), appears in a S u L catalogue.

The second one though is a real dogs dinner. Again, the box and prime roundel appears in the S u L catalogue, however with various secondary attachments and here, to include Scharnhorstbund and Wehrwolf.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

    David

          Hello David,
Nice mint brace of buckles there. No need to worry about the single solder spot version -- the 20s/30s were a hotbed of bizarre buckles and construction methods. There are hooks, nuts and bolts, soldered pins, flaps, flanges, sweat-soldered roundels, etc. The Turnerbund in particular has legions of variations. The second variant's base was used by very many organizations as well -- the manufacturer simply applying the various unit badges to the generic base buckle.
Many thanks, by the way, for your great additions to the forum. I am a particular fan of the buckles of the 20s/30s and look forward to some more of your very worthy submissions.
          Kevin

            David,

A great brace of buckles, and like Kevin said, don't worry about the single solder spot (I stopped worrying long ago). The producers had this basic 'generic' type of buckle to which the myriad types of insignia would be attached as per demand - just look at the two S&L pages reproduced by Catella, and the descriptions found in other catalogues too: Finish could be brass, Neusilber, 'chromed' (verchromt), emblems in any finish imaginable and technically possible at the time.

Kevin, I have a special empathy for these Weimar era political/boy scout/associations buckles as well. Perhaps we could get a thread going on this subject and see what other Members can show?

            Regards, Karl
