    Unmarked SS buckle ...

Would like to hear opinions about this buckle.
Unfortunately these are the only pictures I have.
    Thanks.

I can see a fair amount of the original silver/grey paint finish on both sides. This is a really nice example!

On a nickel silver SS buckle only the front is finished with the dull silver finish.

It's hard to believe all those regulations as 100% accurate, when you have seen/have clear proof that nickel SS buckles were painted on the reverse.

OK, I have observed over the years that there is a very distinctive appearance whenever there is finish present, versus where there is no finish and it is the same with most all TR nickel items, not just buckles. I first noticed this many years ago, while examining a mint, unissued SA/SS dagger grip eagle that had 100% of the paint on it. This paint always has a particular glow whenever light shines on it, and it can easily be seen. I also have a few SS buckles that still have some of the paint on them, (including a near mint Fat eagle that has a lot of paint on the front and back).

Anyway, I have put together some photos here to try and show what I am talking about, (with limited photos available). In each photo, the red marks show where finish can be seen, while the blue marks point to where there is none.

                    Thanks!

                    Chris

In my opinion, the buckle that started this thread has a lot more finish remaining on the back side, than it does on the front, (same as with the EM 35/36 that I showed).

Comparing the dull silver coating on early SS buckles produced after the order to cover them with anything else is just 100% wrong since you cannot. Only SS buckles were subject to this order, which was an SS order (not RZM or else) for SS buckles and SS buckles ONLY! Also, do not compare silver finish (thick and all over the buckle - front, rear and sides) which could be nickeled, plated, chromed or else with the dull grey coating which was only on the front. The pictures you are showing do not show this paint to the back! Here are similar pictures where maybe you could have the feeling there is a layer on the back but there is absolutely none! I did not get those pictures from anywhere else: they are from SS buckles I have sold in the last year. The first one I am posting here, also a fat eagle but mint, I still have it in hands available for sale ($1750 USD). Full covered on its front, nothing on its back. And the officer you just posted is MY buckle, MY picture (sold it in spring 2019)! There was NO paint where you believe there was! Do you really think makers just trying to go out of the big recession will waste money by spraying (and wasting) paint if they were not obliged to?

35/36's when I had two. Both dull gray coating on front (one full, one with still some) nothing on back. The two last pictures are showing the one with full, sold in fall 2019 (the other was sold years ago)

So, once again, do not confuse light reflection with paint! And/or finish with regulation anti reflection dull coating!!
