    Stug III Ausf G commandei

Although he probably rarely sat, when the stug commander sat in his seat, did he sit facing forward or to the side?

    Thanks

Forward of course - only the loader faced to the side

Yes, like all german tanks - been in almost every type, and even a Tiger II has so little space, one have to wonder how 5 soldiers plus ammo plus gear would fit in...

Very very tight altogether. I had a chance of getting into 3 StuGs last year, and even when there was no hurry, I found it difficult to move around...BEING ALONE inside I believe they chose short guys as tanker crew.

Thats common sense or collectors myths, but its not true. Met many tanker vets over the years, almost all were big, some even bigger than me (1,87)

How did you get on in the Driver and the Radio Operator positions? Did they have more room than the three guys in the turret?

Apologies OP didn't mean to highjack your thread and take it in another direction!

In the Stug III the driver's seat's back is collapsible, so driver would pull the back down flat, slide to his place and pull the back up again (I think). See it from the gunner's position:

Well, once you are into your position, your fine, there is enough room to be what you are there for.
In tanks driver and RO had to use their hatches, even in TIGER I theres no way to crawl from turret to frontal positions.

Personally my all time favourite is the gunners position inside the TIGER II: once inside I can almost stand straight up, from turret floor to turret roof. But then the seats upright back "part" (dont know the english word) is in front of your belly - how to get over it? Looked up, and saw 2 u-irons welded under the roof. Grap then, pull yourself up like a gymasiths, and you sit!
Moving the 18ton turret with just one hand was a great experience!

Unfortunately not! It is one my list to attend the Kassel show but can't do it this year.

Was the height of the commanders seat adjustable?
