I had one like this one many years ago. I never got to know what it was for. It was lost later.

It is an early WWII U.S. 50 Cal. Ammo can for the 6569820 (D69820) Cradle & Pintle Assembly as seen on the M7 Howitzer Motor Carriage and the M4 series of Medium Tanks.
