C Hook for Panther - Tiger 1 - King Tiger

          Hi All,

The C Hooks used on the Panther, Tiger 1, and King Tiger (Tiger 2) were all the same Type.

My King Tiger one weighs in at 27 kg !

          Will post Photos later.

          Kind regards,

          Pete.

            King Tiger C Hook

            Hi All,

Ok - So here are the pictures of my latest collection item.

Took a bit of work to free off the Locking Device - but still working on getting the Base-Plug free and then dismantling the whole C Hook for Photos.

            Then proper cleaning and regreasing.

Like I mentioned in my last post, as far as I know - The Panther, Tiger 1, and Tiger 2 (King Tiger) C Hooks were all around the same Type - Size - Weight.

It would be nice to find out who manufactured these - and if there is any Formal Documentation, Instruction Manuals or Information for them.

If you have something like that then please let us know and show us some pictures.

            Kind regards,

            Pete

I was just wondering what stopped the locking part rotating and then I saw the picture with the holes and pegs visible.

                Locking Device

                Hi steverobertsbbc,

Yes - the locking device is held in place by a Bolt, Washer, and strong Spring.
Have a look at one of my earlier posts in this section where you will see all the separate parts and other info.

This one is for the Medium Tanks.

Don't be tempted to bash the locking device with a big hammer as it could break the shaft off.
It took a few days to free mine.
Best of all is if you can free off and remove the Base Plug first - then use plenty of penetrating oil and leave it for a while - and then try to free off the parts by pushing the Locking Device out from the Base Plug end.

                Kind regards,

                Pete.

I'm struggling to see how that works now. I assume the spring is pulling the handle back down so that the holes engage with the pegs and you have to pull it out against the spring tension to allow you to twist it, but I can't see how it's secured to enable that?

                    C Hook Operation

                    Hi steverobertsbbc,

You're quite right when you say '.. assume the spring is pulling the handle back down so that the holes engage with the pegs and you have to pull it out against the spring tension to allow you to twist it ..'

Hopefully this will diagrame will explain it a bit better. Sorry if it's a bit basic and not to scale

Not drawn the Base Plug, but it's there to protect the internals - and to keep the Grease in.

If anyone has any further questions, or can/wants to add to this then please feel free to comment.

                    Kind regards,

                    Pete

                        Large 'C' Hook Parts

Hi all 'C' Hook Lovers !

Ok - so I finally managed to dismantle my Beast of a 'C' Hook

I'm not going to Lie - it was a right bitch to get the Base Plug out - but I got there in the end.

Once that was removed the rest came apart dead easy.

This last picture shows the cavity for the compression spring and securing bits.
Plenty of Grease will go in here once everything is ready to be put back together.

                        Kind regards,

                        Pete.

This has got to be one of the most intriquing threads I have followed and that is meant most sincerely. Also, as a shadetree mechanic with a 1941 Ford 9N tractor, old Subaru stationwagons in the past, and other assorted vehicles, I find it easy to imagine German tankers sometimes having a h*ll of a time with the spring parts in those c-hooks clogged with mud and other corruption. Cheers...

                            Hi BB75,

The main problem with the 'C' Hooks was at the top end - and not so much at the spring and bolt internal end.

On both of mine that I dismantled the internal Base Plug ends were still filled with grease. All I have done is wiped these clean with a rag.

If you look at the area where the shaft meets the Locking Lever it's clear to see on this one that there has been a lot of corrosion.

The shaft should be the same thickness all the way up like in the right hand photo.

On my first Medium 'C' Hook the locking Lever was missing - it had snapped off at the joint to the shaft.

That's why I say - Don't hit the Lever with a Hammer using Brute Force to try and free them off

                            Kind regards,

                            Pete.

                              Both my 'C' Hooks

                              Hi All,

Ok - so after a bit of a cleanup, greasing, and reassemble I finally got my Beast to how I wanted it.

I have included the Smaller Medium 'C' Hook purley for comparison.

If somebody has a genuine Tiger and/or Panther 'D' Shackle in their collection then could you please send me a photo with Dimensions - thanks.

                              Kind regards,

                              Pete.
