    Orterkompass for sale

    Hello,

A colleague of mine has a very rare Orterkompass for sale. This item was intended to be mounted on Tigers, Panthers, Pz IV’s, and the Luchs, many of which can be seen sporting the mounting bracket on the turret roof.
If you are, (or know of anybody else who might be), interested in acquiring this item, please get in touch, either on this forum, or by PM.

    Hi Ian,

I think the Orterkompass with special mounting (number "27-4168.A") is almost absolute guarantee not intended for be mounted on tanks (PzIV, PzV, PzVI).

Two important conditions, as described in the directive D2013/2 (January 1945), are not given by this mounting type:

    a) Low height of the mounting --> space between turret roof and Orterkompass same or greater 300 mm to minimise the risk of magnetic interferences)
    b) Mechanical fastening of the Orterkompass on the turret roof by three screws plus nuts --> In emergency situations the delicate Orterkompass should be quickly and easily disassembled by the commander without tools

The mountig-number presented in the original german manual is "27-4185000". I think mountings like yours and others similars are prototypes or planned for use in other vehicles (but not tanks).

You can find a compilation about the Orterkompass in my Panther-blog (in spanish language but with some 3D-virtual models and pictures):

      Hi Jen,

thank you for the information. Nice website by the way!

The problem of magnetic interference and quick release has been mentioned when these compasses have been discussed in the past, and as far as I know, no conclusion has ever been reached, but you do make a compelling case.

So there would seem to be at least 2 versions of the holder; a tall one, (giving the 300mm clearance), and a shorter one. Do you think the actual compass unit was the same, with the holder being determined by which vehicle it was to be fitted in? And if not for tanks, would you have any idea as to which other vehicles the compass may have been intended for?

      Kind regards,

      Ian
