    JanC,
    Thanks.
That is what I do not understand.
The Rpg head travels at high speed and surely pass through the chains and hits the turret, so....

You can see an RPG in flight. They are not fast at all.
The idea is that the chains will disrupt enough of the impact/detonation to greatly lessen its effect.

Ramjet, you must visit if you are interested in armour. The Wehrtechnischesammlung in Koblenz is also very interesting but they are in the process of removing most Wehrmacht artifacts. The Wehrmacht armour has been moved to Trier in a warehouse where it is no longer open to the public.

Apparently there is a legal battle for the US Tiger I which was diverted to the UK somehow.

Marvellous photo's. Thanks for posting them. With the £'000's spent on restoring the tanks you would think that they would lash out a couple of £'s to get a more masculine figure for the inside shots.

Thanks for the photos. I was last there in 1987 when I took my father. I need to go back, so perhaps this fall after the Kassel Show. I returned to the Wehrtechnischesmuseum in Koblenz last year.

                  Hi,

Thank you for posting the images!

I am planning a visit in 2016, and I can not wait! It is nice to see the Tiger I now on display as well.

                  Best,

                  Jeff

RPG's do indeed travel quite slowly, not much faster than a large firework rocket....an RPG uses a shaped charge that on detonation has to be at a set measured distant from the armour, a focal point, like when using a magnifying glass and the sun to burn your name in wood. The idea behind chains, spaced armour and grills is to pre detonate that charge so the focal point is way off the actual tanks body and will not be able to penetrate. They can also tear up or disrupt the incoming RPG round that is made from very thin metal.

Fantastic images btw....I'll be back there in May
