Tiger 113 was part of schwere SS-Panzer Abteilung 101. That battalion had all Tiger Is at the beginning of the Normandy campaign, but in July the 1. Kompanie was sent back to Germany to draw new Tiger II tanks. They returned to the front in August and lost all but one of the Tiger IIs to enemy action, running out of fuel, or being unable to cross the Seine. Tank 113 was reported to have run out of fuel and was abandoned in Jemappes on 2.9.44.

According to Patrick Agte's book on Michael Wittmann, the commander of tank 113 in s. SS-Pz.Abt. 101 was SS-Oberscharführer Heinrich Ernst. That was at the beginning of the campaign, but it's a pretty good assumption that he was commander of Tiger II 113 as well.

      Best,
      Greg

        Hi

Tiger II #113 was apparently under the command of Helmut Fritsche, who later fought in Hungary. the original Tiger I #113 was lost at Villers-Bocage on 13 June 44 and its commander Ernst was killed.

All these Tiger II were in action north of the R Seine only, not south and therefore did not have the problem of having to cross the river.

          Hi Lennard,

Thanks; I should have said just "rivers" because of course you're right; 1. Kompanie SS-101 was not located south of the Seine when they returned with the Tiger IIs.

          Thanks,
          Greg
