Does such registry exist? Is it possible to find put what vehicle went under the number WH 498 414. Or at least, was it a bike, car, or truck? Thanks!

Numbers
Hi Theodor,l
basically you cannot tell from a WH number plate what kind of vehicle it was or to which unit it was issued.
The Wehrkreiss number system is 1935-40 only, after that its just batches of numbers issued by local offices and given out to new vehicles being manufactured in their local area.
Numbers were given to vehicle either at the manufacturing site or at the first Hza Depot they went to, and this would be a long time before being issued to a military unit.
Consequently close together numbers could be issued to a car factory, a motorcycle factory a halftrack factory etc., if all such factories existed in one local area for example.
To the German authorities after 1940, its just numbers, they were never meant to be for certain vehicle types, or for certain units, just identification numbers.
All you can do is look for WWII photos or if you are lucky, paperwork may exist from units where their vehicles are listed and identified by these numbers .
So where have you seen this number ?
regards lennard
