    The soldier which is depicting is a Feldwebel. I don't know the US equivalent. All I can say it that this is a kind of senior NCO.
    Here is the full list of NCO ranks within the German army (by ascending order) :
    - Unteroffizier : junior NCO
    - Unterfeldwebel : this rank was rarely encountered and most of Unteroffizier soldiers jump to the Feldwebel rank
    - Feldwebel
    - Oberfeldwebel
    - Stabsfeldwebel : this rank was also rarely encountered.
    As far as I can see, the cypher on the shoulder strap is a gothic P which should be for Panzerjäger ("Tank hunter" unit).
    I don't have my books at the time I am writing but it should be rather easy to give a kind of unit for a soldier wearing a black wrapper and related to a Panzerjäger unit by checking for example in Bender's book covering history of the Panzertruppe or Traditions of the German Army.
    Without these books, I would say this soldier might be assigned to a Schwere Panzerjäger Abteilung. I think this kind of unit was equipped with Jagdpanthers, Ferdinands or Jagdtigers. To sum up, mighty and heavy ones !!
    This "P" cypher makes a great difference between a "usual" panzer unit and the one your relative was assigned.
