syrian panther
A friend of mine (T-V) said to me that one of these buddy of syria which had gone went national library of Damas, had found a photograph of Panther given by French, returned after tests not very conclusive. Sorry but no picture.
As France increased it's sales of equipment to Israel in the 1950's it felt compelled to supply more useful equipment to the Syrians to maintain a balance between the two nations. To this end a number of reconditioned German vehicles were supplied in some numbers. These included PzKpfw IV Ausf H and a limited number of Stug IIIs and JadgPanzer IVs.
Zaloga provides a summary of the more unusual ex-German vehicles in Syrian service. It would seem that France supplied 40 reconditioned vehicles consisting of PzKpfw IV, Jagdpanzer IV and Stug IIIs. Later more PzKpfw IVs were purchased from Czechoslovakia and Spain. In his book, Tank Battles of the Middle East Wars Part One, are photographs of Syrian Jagdpanzer IVs (stated they had 6), Hummels (5), Stug III G (28) and Panzer IVs from France (28).

Do you have a link to this story? This is along the lines of the WW1 French tank that was found in Afghanistan recently, and it too is being shipped back here.

Ah So
For my part, I remember seeing something about Panthers being used in Korea; sold or given to the North Koreans by the Chinese, who had gotten them from the Soviet Union. I remember seeing a picture of 3-4 burned out ones in some mountain pass in Korea, destroyed in a US air attack. Anyone remember reading or hearing of that?-Ralph Abercrombie

Judging from the StuG's condition, I would say it could have lain there since 1967 - 15 years from the date of the picture. Thank you for posting those - it's nice to know not all of these have been tunred into scrap or are rusting at Aberdeen!
