Camouflage wheels on Panther?

Hi,

Does anyone know if Panthers, particularly the steel wheel versions, had camouflage on their wheels?

considering most period pictures of panther, I would answer : usually NO

but I have this 2 ones in which it seems that the wheels have different colors

these wheels were usually painted in sand color, but from time to time some wheels were entirely painted green or brown. The various colored wheels were put randomly on a vehicle.

to put a 3 tone camo on one wheel is pointless and completely the opposite of camouflage ones the wheels are running. Unfortnunately many museums make this mistake.

the above B/W pics show some shades but this is probably caused by the color of mud, oil stains etc

Camo on wheels

There are period photos of panzers painted with camo patterns on the wheels, even photos with the spray machine and operative actually carrying out this operation whilst adding it to the hull and turret.

As stated though, this is only really of any effect whilst stationary, as when moving it actually highlights the wheels, or any other moving part.

I have read varying opinions of camo, types, effectiveness, but a large moving object is hard to hide. Stationary is perhaps a different story.

agreed vehicles that were painted in the field had the risk of beeing camo'd everywhere including the wheels. Factory fresh painted vehicles normally were painted and camo's according to a fixed pattern....wheels were not camo'd.

Anyway if some "picasso" in a unit would have taken the effort of camouflaging wheels in a 3 tone , his masterpiece wouldn't live long once the vehicle did some cross country ........all would be dyed in mud color

As did at least one King Tiger crew member, judging from this photograph of him painting his wheels in a tricolour scheme...

I think that just goes to prove that logic doesn't always win.

I'm sure you're absolutely right about them leaving the factory with single colour wheels, but as soon as they were in the field I think pretty much anything goes...
