What tanks are the Tiger I's in the Movies?

    I have a question.

What i know of there are only one running Tiger I left in the world (Tiger Tank 131). So when a Tiger I is needed in a movie usually modified thanks are used.

Usually it is quite clear because the balance in the picture of the tanks are wrong. The tower too far back etc. You can usually see it easy on thet the tracks don't go up in the front of the tank as they do on Tigers. (Sorry d

Now to my question. Does anyone know what tanks are used as Tigers? What is the most common tank being refitted to "look like" a Tiger I? Are there any good site about this etc?

In Kelly's Heros, I believe they used T-34's. Not sure what it was in Band of Brothers.

Here's something on the Tigers in Saving Private Ryan. I think all of the Tiger mock-ups in recent movies were built off T-34 chassis.

I was watching something on the History Channel the other day (wish I had recorded it) that had a bit on movie tanks. The M1 tanks in "Courage Under Fire" were built off US M-48s. Pretty good job, and pretty reasonable representation of the inside of an M1!

            T-34's from bovington.

Definately t-34 modified with upper hull rewelded to look like tiger. good job mostly, only panzer fans would notice that it was'nt a tiger. the tracks and running wheels really gave it away in the first few seconds for me. Why can't we have some really rich guy that's into tanks like us re-produce replicas? if i had a billion dollars (I'd really spend on some stupid stuff like remaking WWII tanks!)

            panzers forward!

The Tigers in SPR and BoB were based on T55's, if you're in the UK the weekend of July 24/25 get yourself along to the War and Peace Show at Beltring in Kent where you'll be able to see one of them.

The treads on the tanks in SPR are definately NOT T-55 Treads. They are most definately from a T-34. Also, I think the T-55 has a distinctive bogey wheel outlay, with the front wheel seperated by a gap from the second which the tanks in SPR do not have.

Hi Ashley, the Tiger tank you refer to is part of the "Kevin Wheatcroft" collection. He is the chap who owns the Famo 18 ton half track seen at Beltring

                      Cheers, Ade.

P.S. See you at Beltring again this year

Does the Munster tank museum not have a running Tiger I? Maybe I'm thinking of another tank?

On a side-line, does Samaure(sp?) have a running King Tiger?

H Rich, they do have a running King Tiger.

Jack Melvin posted some pics a year or two ago of it running around the arena.

                          Cheers, Ade.

Saumur has a running Tiger II. Munster never had a Tiger I as such, but for many years (ca. 1990-1999) they had the Tiger from Aberdeen Proving Grounds on display in various German museums, including Munster. Recently, they recieved on loan the Tiger I from Saumur. Neither the APG nor the Saumur Tiger I were runners. Currently, they have a pretty good Tiger collection in Munster:

                            - Tiger I (from Saumur)
                            - Tiger II
                            - Sturmtiger (from WTS)

The Tiger at the Wheatcroft collection may be the Tiger I from APG. It went to England after it left Germany. Wonder whether it will be the Tiger I that runs or the alleged copies they were supposed to make?

I have to agee with Panzerboy on this one. A friend of mine ownes a company that provides weapons and other equipment for the movie business. We spoke of SPR and he stated it was a T-34 chassis. I thought the tiger looked pretty good. Better than the M-48's used in Battle of the Bulge and Patton to name a few.
