I can only speak with experience (limited) about the PIAT.

Nearly some 30 years ago I remember going to Dartmoor on exercise as a keen school ATF cadet and a PIAT was produced for us to try out. We were always given the best weapons, Lee-enfields, Webleys, Brens all the up to date stuff.

As I recall it was spring cocked and very heavy.

We were invited to fire at a selection of wrecked vehicles and as I recall not one round hit from around 50/80 yrds.

Youthful inexperience or poor weapon?

I know which version I prefer.

I too have played with a PIAT. They are a swine to cock, even standing up, never mind doing it laying down as instructed in the manual.

Thanks for the pic (shudders) looks like the type of round, as I recall we were limited to smoke rounds as the original ammo was N/A or too unstable I can't recall which.

They were indeed difficult to cock with most of us young lads not being strong enough to do it with the deed being left to the regular NCO.

If I were facing a T34 I would prefer the panzerfaust had the UK been invaded I am sure the PIAT would have been the last choice, I can just hear the shouts from the 13 year old Home Guards, "hold on, its not fair I have'nt cocked it yet".

The reason i did not include the Molotov was simply that i was comparing ballistic type AT weapons. The Molotov was a decent low-tech solution but was really a VERY close-range AT solution. The others had a chance to kill and AFV beyond 20m which you cant say for the Molotov cocktail. Also, unless the burning solution penetrated a slit or engine grill, it really was'nt that effective. More of a danger to open topped SP guns and the like, not buttoned-up panzers. Also quite dangerous to the user if dropped or hit by enemy fire while throwing! Not putting it down or anything, it just did'nt fit into the catagory i had defined. i disagree strongly that the molotov was the most widely used and effective weapon, maybe for the russians, but not anyone else. They all had thier own, highly effective high-tech solutions the problem (except for maybe the Brits, as the PIAT seems to be least favorite with us Grogs and the Vets alike!)
