    vehicle numbering

Is there any way to determine which unit a specific Panzer was in just by the number on the turret of the Panzer? For example, if in a photo you can see the number 333 painted on the side of the Panzer, which unit would this Panzer be in? What about armored vehicles, half-tracks, etc.?

    Hi Todd,

Generally, the three-number system identified the Kompanie (company), Zug (platoon) and Vehicle- i.e. 333 was the 3. Kompanie, 3. Zug, 3. Panzer. There's no information about the unit (i.e. Regiment) contained in the turret number. That was usually a symbol somewhere on the tank.

Matt's right, you need to look for the unit symbol such as the 'key' used by 1.SS LSSAH painted on the vehicle
