Advice on preservation of a Notek light.

I have an original Notek light on my repro radio truck. Unfortunately the paint is not intact and it is beginning to rust. Does anyone have suggestions on what to do to preserve the original paint?

The notek color isn't quite as far off the rest of the truck as the photo would suggest. The paint has attracted a lot of dirt and it is a lot darker.

I imagine regular car wax should do. I know it might make it a bit shiny but that or it getting rusted . Another possibility is using oil or grease...
