    Panther Roadwheels

    Hi guys,
Just picked this heavy guy up yesterday. It's a Panther roadwheel in the original tan ordnance paint, it's the version with the 24 bolts (for the Panther Ausf. A and G if I remember correctly). This wheel was found in Frankfurt am Main, in 1945.

I'm curious if other members have examples of these wheels with the original paint on it, it's quite interesting im my opinion. Would love to see them!

    Greetings and thanks in advance

      Hello,

      Nice example.
I had a few of these in my collection, some years ago.
Yours has a few extra holes, very common as these wheels were reused postwar for carts.

      Cheers

        Hi

it looks that this wheel has been stored in a very dry location hence the almost immaculate paintcondition.
a pity it has been redrilled
whats the condition of the rubber rim ?...does it still has the "seem"

do you have more panzer stuff?

        ciao

The seem is indeed still there, I don't think this wheel was used much.
Which holes were exactly drilled postwar? The smaller ones?

I also have a Sdkfz 250 roadwheel with 90% of the original tan paint, and soon I'm going to pick up a Sdkfz 251 road wheel with the original camo scheme, but that's not really panzer stuff.

I've just been told there are more holes in this wheel, because this wheel is one of the two wheels that have both holes for the axe, and holes for the clutch so it can drive the other wheels.
So, am I right and has this wheel not been redrilled? If not, please post any proof (i will get some post-discount).

              Thanks!

hmm hmm....weird story to say the least.......this is not a Russian BT 5 or BT 7 tank that was able to run without tracks

believe me it has been redrilled
just give me the diameter of the smallest hole and the larger hole and I'll compare that with my Pantherwheels

were in Belgium do you live?

                  ciao

Bullitt is correct, it has been redrilled.

But it is a really nice wheel all the same, i wouldnt say no to havinging it even though its drilled.

First I was sceptic about the small holes, but I'm with you on this one P. / Scrooge. Just look at the original tan ordnance paint in the small hole! This can't be redrilled, otherwise the paint wasn't there.

Hmm.. I see what you mean Luft, even the chamfer looks the same or at least close to the ‘original’ bolt holes. Most of the redrilled ones I have haven’t been chamfered.

I can honestly say I haven’t seen this hole configuration before, perhaps someone else here has? Somewhere in the back of my mind though I seem to think I may have seen a ‘star’ shaped hub cover once.

Alternately could it be that it was either used for some other purpose or maybe re-sprayed after the war?

It is an odd one and beyond my knowledge.

Thanks for your input. I think it is one of the inner driving wheels/road wheels, that you don't clearly see from the outside. I have no doubts about the originality of the paint.

Just need to say my post should have read:

'Most of the redrilled ones I have SEEN haven’t been chamfered.'

I wish i did own some Panther road wheels but sadly there are not many laying around in barns the UK

                              pantherwheel

                              hi

@ Luftwaffe : can you give me the diameters of the holes please

@babyteeth : well the Brits did take some panthers and jagdpanther home for evaluation...some ended up in some scrapyard others were shot to smithereens...surely some wheels must have been removed and stored no?

these kind of wheels were almost always modified to fit on some cart, some were redrilled, others had parts bolted or welded onto the centre to fit on the new axle. The latter can be modified back to original condition without much traces.

                              ciao
