    What engine?

Can somebody help me to identified that engine. I think that it is related to army. It is painted green and also some details are gray (fieldgrau).

It looks alike but I don't think it is the same engine. I seems as it had to be bolted to something.

I can understand why Arquille might think it is a chainsaw motor as it is made by STIHL.

I think what you have there maybe be a generator used to drive a large electric circular or band saw in a wood mill. I have read that Sthil made motors for this purpose but they would be quite rare I think.
Sadly Stihl like many companies destroyed their records from 39-45 so finding information on it maybe a bit hard.

I did find another forum in which a similar engine from 1942 is discussed. Seems they think it was either a generator or compressor.

What ever it turns out to be it must be rare.

The literal translation is ‘Gearbox’ to the left and ‘start’ to the right.

I am assuming that the ‘Start’ position is for starting the engine and ‘Gearbox’ is to engage the engine for what ever purpose it was used for.

Thank you very much for your answers. First I also thought that it may-be chain saw (for name STIHL), but it is too heavy for that. Generator or compressor seems to be a logical.
Then it came to Estonia with german army.
