    Starting device, Tank, Halftrack ??

    Hi all,

I was given this piece and the former owner told me it should be from some kind of german tank. However Iam never sure about these storys so do you have and clue what it could be.
It is an "Anlasser" or "Zündverteiler", dont know the correct english word for it.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Jens

What you have there is one of a pair of Bosch Magnetos used on the Maybach HL 230 engine. The engine was used in the Tiger, King Tiger and Panther.

Have a look at this video about 1.36 mins in.

Great thanks alot for the info. Its indeed the same piece as pictured on youtube.

So the guy was right in what he said.

Anybody building a Tiger or Panther right now ?

      Thanks, Jens

Different but still on the subject of starting up the engine, here for reference is how an external starter unit looks from a book showing some obscure details. Of the bottom two drawings, the top one illustrates the motorpowered handheld device you stick into the hole for the crank and the bottom one takes power from a Kubel.

I think they may have been used on the HL210 as well but i cant find a good picture.

I don’t know if you’re interested in value but i just found a guy selling the same but in really poor condition for 180 Eur... if fact he is also selling a Bosch JGN6R18 (Same thing really) for 700 Eur..

          Nice find

Oh and its called a 'Magnetzünder'

              To babyteeth

Why do you think that JGN6R18 and JGN6L3 are the same?
It seems to me, that this is not true.
At least, L and R, I think, means "links" and "rechts".
The sprocket is also different from required for HL210/HL230 engines.
Do you know, what means the number after the letter - 3, 15, 18 and so on?

              To zbv500

JGN6L3P is a magneto from some versions of Maybach HL42 engines.
Your magneto marked as JGN6L3a - I don't know what does this letter means and is this difference is fundamental.

                Hi RTY

It was part assumption, part vague memory of reading somewhere that on the Jacques Littlefield Panther engine rebuild they had to use one JGN6R18 and one JGN6L3. If you look at the very end of the video clip I posted you can just about make out that one has the oval Id palate of a 3 and the other the oblong plate of a 15 or 18, which made me think that what I remembered reading could just be true.
The only picture I could find of a JGN6 knowingly from a SdKfz 250/251, has a different drive sprocket from the one that zbv500 has pictured. The one on zbv’z looks much more heavy duty than the Sd.Kfz.250/251 one picutred below to me.

I’m not an expert on Maybach’s nor Bosch Magneto’s, so I kind of made and educated guess, sorry if it turns out I was wrong. All the research I did came up with very little information on Bosch Magnetos from 39-45.
I think the 6 means 6 cylinders, you could be correct on L & R meaning "links" and "rechts", though the firing sequence for each bank of a V 12 is the same, so I’m not completely aware why you would denote "links" or "rechts", any thoughts on that?
I am wondering if the 3, 15, 18 is the Wattage output? As in 300 and so on.
Do you know what the ignition system wattage is for different Maybachs? I couldn’t find any information on that either.

Again sorry if I am wrong on any of this, I have little reference material to hand and am just working of trawling the internet and comparing and applying what I find to my understanding of how engines work.

I don't know what types of magnetos they used (will try to know), but I don't think they could have big problems with buying proper magnetos. They are very seldom thing, but not impossible to get (because they had money). I can assume that magnetos from different years or plants had different data plates. Or maybe Littlefield people used some "3" details for assembling "18" magneto - I think that cases of that magnetos are equal.

As I know, more wide sprocket was used on HL38 engines, and more narrow - on HL42 engines. HL38 used another magneto, but maybe zbv500' magneto was "downgraded" to be installed on HL38 engines? Assumptions...

HL210/230 used magnetos with spur gears, not skew bevel wheels (terminology from dictionary)...

I mean "links" and "rechts" are direction of rotation which gives proper ignition sequence and ignition advance working in proper direction (forward, not backward).

I am wondering if the 3, 15, 18 is the Wattage output? As in 300 and so on.
I think that these magnetos can't have wattage different in 5-6 times.
