The "sig33" - what?

Okay, I picture-hunt WWII AFVs on the internet a lot, and came across this assault cannon thing that I wasn't familiar with several times. I have seen it called sIg33, SIG 33, and such, but the real problem is that it although the photos are all of something called sig 33, the actual spg looks different!

I've seen what appears to be a 150mm gun mounted almost bare on some chassis, with a tall, thin wall of metal around the front and sides. I have also seen a large, boxyish-looking beast with full armor protection. But, if these spgs look different, why are they all called "sig 33" or some variation? Am I missing something?

Hi,

The sig33 as you call it was a stopgap 150mm field gun stuck on top of any available chassis they could find and is seen in various guises.

The sIG 33 was a artillery field piece- that 's all. sIG 33 stands for schweres Infanterie Geschütz 33


The vehicle you are asking about maybe one of a group of Artillerie Selbstfahrlafette, (self propelled artillary) that used the sIG 33- not the 10,5 cm le.F.H. Those howitzer were used but different family-(Wespe)
The best way to anwer this is can you show us a picture?
The one you maybe referring to is named; 15 cm schwere Infanteriegeschuetz (mot S) auf Panzerkampfwagen I (Sd.Kfz.101) ohne Aufbau Ausfuehrung B, nicknamed a Bison I.

The sIG 33 was mounted on several chassis' including the Pz.38(t) which was named Geschutzwagen 38 fuer s.I.G.33/1 (Sf.) (Sd.Kfz 138/1) nicknamed Grille and another version of this was called SF mit s.I.G. 33 auf Fahrgestell Pz.Kpfw. 38 (t) (Motor Mitte) Ausf. K Geschuetzwagen 38 M fuer s.I.G./2 (Sf) (Sd.Kfz.138/1) there was a K version of this M that had a rectangular drivers compartment.
Also the infantry field piece was mounted on a converted Berghetzer chassis .

Also it was mounted on the Panzer II chassis 15 cm s.I.G. 33 B Selbstafahrlafette-(nicknamed Bison II),

So sIG 33 was simply the gun itself, not the name of the whole spg. That clears things up quite a bit...

one is bassed in a large structure on a PZI chassis, the other is very low down, with a limited gun sheild on a PZII chassis.

You don't make sense? The s.I.G. 33 was a field gun- the Grille and Bison are seperate vehicles which mounted the s.I.G. 33. Maybe I've got you wrong but they did not call the gun a Grille.

yes, sIG 33 was a infatry gun caliber 150mm, and it was pleaced(?? my english :?) on platform of Pzkpfw I, II and 38(t). and one of they was called Grille, only i not remember who.

Okay yes now you make sense- I guess its a language thing. The name Grille was used for a couple of vehicle based on the Pz(t)-38 chassis.
