Hello all, I went to the APG ordinance museum yesterday. They are moving the tanks to Fort Lee Va and I wanted to preserve my memories of this fantastic grouping of tanks of all nationalities not just panzers. My Grandfather was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 505th Ordinance Co. North Africa and Italian Campaign. We would go golfing and then head over to the museum for some tank talk .Back in the 70's you could climb on them and some of the hatches were actually opened.Anyway heres some pictures, and the Elephant shown in Tank Overhaulhttp://s248.photobucket.com/albums/g...t=DSC_0052.jpg

The King Tiger was sent to the Patton museum in the early 1990s & is on display there. The Tiger I is at K. Wheatcroft's place in GB & is susposed to be back maybe this year to Ft. Lee. The majority of the collection is going to Ft. Lee by 2012 where there is a 90K sq/ft building being built where most of it will be housed in. The rail gun is going there also & will be put inside & the building will be built around it. There will be some vehicles left at APG & there will be a museum of sorts left there but it is not certain how big or what it will have at this time. The Ordnance School is being moved to Ft. Lee & most of the collection will follow it. The large German pieces that have not been visually restored yet are susposed to be done in the next few years as most of the other pieces that have been already visually restored. Some of these finished pieces are in storage in other buildings around APG currently & some have been put back outside sadly for the time being due to lack of inside storage space. We, the members of the Ordnance Museum Foundation have been trying to raise the money for 19 years to build buildings to get the collection inside, now through The Center For Military History it is being done by Uncle Sam finally. There are a few of the tanks that are in such bad shape due to neglet that they may not be movable, such as the WWI Mark V British heavy tank. I Hope this quick explanation clears up a few questions out there. Dirk

Aberdeen proving ground ordinace museum panzers
It has been 49 years since I have seen those tanks and other militaria in Aberdeen but now they will be at fort Lee just 60 miles from my house in Williamsburg.I am looking forward to seeing them again.I n case you did not know it Fort Lee is going to have a museum that will be out of this world.I have a friend that is working on the project and he has shown me pics. of boxs and boxs of all kind of militaria that would stagger the collectors mind.
Enjoy your hobbty
