Amtrack at Yakutat, Alaska

I encountered this vehicle at the end of the Situk River Road in Yakutat, Alaska in 1981. Apparently, it is still languishing there. I used to live and work there, and climbed all over it. I probably have my own pics of it somewhere.

The story went that it was used to haul fishing gear back at one point, and was just abandoned here, near the beach, many years before.

I assume that it will be there until it is completely rusted away. A real shame. Someone should rescue it and restore it.

Here is a picture I found on the internet of it, taken in 2007. It is most probably still there.

Ownership

I think it is just abandoned. It has been there forever. Perhaps someone in Yakutat would know. I had heard it had just been left there at some point, and has become a bit of a local fixture. Only about 500 people live in Yakutat, and I doubt anyone has given it much thought. It is a very isolated place. It would have to be rescued by bringing a barge in, and it would be very expensive and logistically challenging, I should think.

Yep, that's it Homerr. At the end of the Situk River Road, about a couple of miles from where I used to live and work.

Why not try and get it running, and then it could move on its own so you can restore it after loading it on a boat or something. The water is treacherous at certain times of the year up there. I have a demilled M4 18 ton high speed i did the same thing to. Good luck

id say the engine is way to gone to get sorted(though id love to be wrong) though i can guarantee that as soon as you try and move it and the locals find out SOMEONE will want money for it! its ALWAYS the way!
