Can anyone help identify this Jagdtiger?

    Hello,

I am new to this forum and not sure if this is the right place to post this question. I apologize in advance if this is not where I should have posted this. In the attached photos my wife's grandfather is pictured standing on the Jagdtiger. His name was Michael Gingeroski. It appears to me this Jagdtiger suffered a mechanical breakdown, or perhaps struck a mine, and then was scuttled by the crew with explosives. I recently discovered these photos in an old family album and I don't think they were ever published. I don't know who the photographer was or even where it was taken. I believe that this particular Jagdtiger was the subject of a Tamiya model kit in the 1970's. I found a photo of the box art pictured on this forum and it shows a Jagdtiger with the same number and a similar camo pattern. Any information that someone might have about this particular vehicle, it's unit or the possible location of the photo would be greatly appreciated.

    Dave,

No positive ID but i can tell you that based on camo scheme and tactical number this Jagdtiger likely belonged to 2./s.Pz.Jäg.Abt.653. I dont have this particular vehicle identified in my notes but the chart below will give you some idea of where/how 2./ lost some of their vehicles. The reference identified as Munch is for Combat History of Schwere Panzerjäger Abteilung 653 by Karlheinz Münch.

Thanks for the information Richard. It does help to narrow down the area that this photo was taken. Since it appears from your table that the #3 vehicle from this platoon was lost in Besigheim, it can be assumed that unless 214 was destroyed earlier it was also in that area on or about March 16 1945. Unfortunately I have no way of knowing when these photos were taken or where for that matter. Does the Combat History of Schwere Panzerjager Abteilung 653 give dates and places of engagements with allied forces? It sounds like I need to get myself a copy of this book.

      Thanks for your help

        Hi Dave,

It has been 2 to 3 years since i have even had the book out so it is hard to remember specifics but both it and Andrew Devey's Jagdtiger Vol.2 are fairly detailed with regards to operational history. I made a quick look through both and it seems that they are devoid of specifc US units engaged, you mostly see the terms US forces and the Americans but engagements and unit movement are covered.

Münch's work on the 653rd is well regarded but it is a large volume covering it's entire history with only about 100 of its 550 or so pages specific to the Jagdtiger.

Devey's volume 2 covers the operational history of the Jagdtiger so it also includes information on the 512th. His volume 1 covers the technical aspects of the Jagdtiger.

According to the Devey book (page 238) Jagdtiger 214 was blown up in Lauffen (near Heilbronn) on 6.April 1945 after suffering mechnical problems. Previously on 3.April it had been part of a task force fighting in Eppingen, together with Jagdtiger 114 and 123. Both were abandoned there after having mechanical problems.

The name of the commander was "Kohn" or "Kohns" (quote "..the third Jagdtiger Kohns No 214 was running..."). Sadly I do not own the Münch book, so the Andy Devey book is my only reference for the 653. Just noticed that Richard has listed a "Peter Kohns" in his post below.

Nice pictures, I hope more will shop up.

            Oliver,

Thanks for the information from the Devey book, I used the information you provided to find the corresponding events in Münch's book. I have inserted them below.

this is an excerpt from page 442 of Schwere Panzerjäger Abteilung 653 by Karlheinz Münch.

              Jagdtiger photo identification

I have sent these photos to Karl-Heinz at his private and work E-mail. He should have an answer on this for you. One of these was cut up near Sinsheim and a piece of the armor is still in existence in a private collection with original paint, it could even be from this Jagdtiger.

                Jagdtiger photo question.

                Thank you for great photograph!

                There is questions.

①: To this photograph, is a hand added to nothing? Because, in comparison with the nationality mark, I see '214 ' unnaturally.

②: These two images, looks coarse. Will the reason be because it enlarged the original picture is small?

・・・Please forgive rudeness and sorry my broken English.

                Thank you in advance.

I think we are looking at two different Jagdtigers. Look at the shadows, on both pictures the shadow of the photographer is seen on or near the vehicle. Both photos are taking from a height higher than the vehicle's top, but on both photos there is only a small elevation behind the vehicle. Could these vehicle’s have been 'parked' back to back? If both photo's are taken on the seen location, there bust have been some time between them because the shadow’s point to two different directions.

                    Hi,
Thymen i think your correct look at the rear decking on one photo one of the engine covers is lifted not something the average squaddie would do ,perhaps one got stuck and was tried to be towed out before being abandoned.

Ehh ...Ok, I'm assuming you're not joking? The open-top was a common result of demolition charges set off by the crew, they literally blew the top off.

                            Jagdtiger photo ID

Dave, these photos are unknown, as mentioned, I sent this link to Karlheinz Münch who personally knows many of these former Jagdtiger people from this unit and he wrote the following:

"vielen Dank für die Mail mit den Jagdtiger-Aufnahmen!
Beide Bilder kannte ich wirklich nicht.
                            Toll! Super!!!
Die Aufnahmen zeigen die beiden ausgefallenen und dann gesprengten Fahrzeuge (Schleppzug) bei Brackenheim.

Ich habe eine Aufnahme die beide Jagdtiger hintereinander zeigt.

                            Viele Grüße"
                            Karlheinz

roughly translated: "thank you for the e-mail with the Jagdtiger photo, both of these are unknown to me, excellent, super! The photos show both of the unserviceable and later destroyed vehicles (towing unit) by Brackenheim. I have a photo which shows both Jagdtiger behind one another. best regards"

                            your photos are very rare!
