    I found this picture last week with some others....

    My question is: does somebody know which division this is? If it is a division mark.....

    Hi,

    I think it could be runic symbol for Pz Rgt 8 which was part of the 10th Panzer division during the invasion of France. I think this symbol was only used by the Regiment for the invasion and changed prior to 1941 invasion of Russia. Hope this helps

        I recognise the rune itself as the Wolfsangel.

        From Wikipedia:

        "The Wolfsangel (German for "wolf's hook") is a symbol originating in Germany. It is also known as the Wolf's Hook or Doppelhaken. The upright variant is also known as "thunderbolt" (Donnerkeil) and the horizontal variant as "werewolf"."

        It was quite common and was used by multiple divisions, again, according to wikipedia:

        * the 2nd SS Division Das Reich
        * the 4th SS Polizei Division
        * the 34th SS Volunteer Grenadier Division Landstorm Nederland
        * the Hitlerjugend
        * the NS-Volkswohlfahrt

        However, I checked Feldgrau.com ands it seems that 19.Panzer-Division also used the symbol, the upright variant that is.

        Of all these, 34th SS's symbol comes closest, but it was a Grenadier Division, so I guess that's not it. But again, it was a commonly used rune during the Third Reich period so maybe it was just some form of decoration? Or didn't that sort of thing happen? I don't know.

        Relatively unrelated to this picture, but quite interesting is the following picture from The Armor Site. The caption reads: "Leopard 2A4 (seventh batch), Panzerbattalion 214, 7.Panzerdivision, CMTC Hohenfels, December 1995."

              Technically viewed - it is not a good photo - but its defects are in some ways the secret to its charm.

              When you look at the photo, you feel you are there and in the action. You can sense the photographer attempting to frame the picture as the noisy aircraft swoops by. It is in your face!
