    Leather protective panzer garment

    Hi mates,
Can anyone explain this: I want to build a panzerman in leather protective uniform. Can I use any color of jacket and pants /black,grey and brown/ or did they use one color only?Is it possible to use pants and jacket of different colors for one set? Were there KM buttons with anchor or just ordinary pebbled ones on a jackets? If pebbled buttons-were they a replacement by a soldier? Many thanks in advance!!!!!!!!
    best wishes Petr.

The first set of former KM-leather uniforms were grey when handled to tank-crews in early 1944, but have to be painted black by the soldiers. Those given to the 12.SS-Pz.-Div. "Hitlerjugend" in early summer of 1944 (just prior to the invasion) were already the black sets, captured back from italian stocks. The germans had given the italians those for their submarine-crews, but after september 1943 those were captured back by the LAH, and sent back to germany.

Normally the tankers-leather uniforms differ from the navy-suits by: large black plastic buttons instead of the golden navy ones. No navy markings. No shirts-style collar - only a small 2cm wide turtle-neck collar with wire-hook closure. Mostly the leather straps to tighten the arm-openings were removed, so there was no danger to be trapped on something when getting out of the tank in a hurry.

Here is my set for comparison:

Dont use one of those - unless you are planning to create a KM-mannequinn (U- or S-boats, and special-KM-units as well, like 1-men-subs, manned torpedeos, etc) - as they were NEVER used by tank-crews.

There is always the same old story that those were used by tank-crews in normandy, but so far - although many stated they "have seen sometimes somewhere fotos of it in wear" nobody was able to post a pic.

Interesting note that the leather garment that started this thread was manufactured in (occupied) Holland (Dutch maker tag) for the German armed forces, this based on the German "lieferdatum" text. Nice! Nick

                      Hello Nick,

This maker is correct. I have seen some other things from this maker like for example k98 pouches.

What i don't understand is that it must be very hot to wear these type of clothing inside a tank during the hot Normandy summer campaign. Although it offerd protection against flames. I Once used a black an brown one for a panzer display. They were all brown only painted over in grey or black. I will try to find some pictures

                      regards erwin

her the black one with pebbeld buttons. I believe 19mm. This jacket had no km stamp in the leather and no belts on the arms ends

                        regards erwin
