I Usually Do Not Venture On To This Forum As My Interests Lay In Items Relating To The Political Formations Of T He 3rd Reich. However, This Uniform Crosses Over To Panzer. It Is A Tunic For A Hauptsturmfuhrer(captain)from The First Sturmbann Of The 71st N S K K Motorstandarte, Headquartered In Kulm, Motorgruppen Niedrrhein. The Panzer Totenkop Attached To The Lapels Indicate He Served As A Driving Instructor At A Panzer School. The Ribbon Bar And Drl Badge Are Original To The Tunic When Veteran Purchased In The Early 70's. My Collection Is Only The Second Custodian Of This Uniform.

Unfortunately, there is not further information available. The tunic is an issue form and contains no owner information. Although I have never encountered another piece like this, an old time collector/dealer friend of mine told me he purchased two tunics so adorned back in the 60's(the dark(the dark ages of collecting). He thought the veteran he was buying the tunics from had added the skulls, so he removed them. This tunic is shown on page 45 of "Uniforms, Organization & History of the NSKK" by Angolia and Littlejohn.

Totenkopf
The Totenkopf has a long and glorious tradition in the in the german military going back to the middle ages . It was warn by elite infantry cavalry and some SturmTruppen up till the end of WW1 and was ment to stike fear in the enemy. The adaptation by the panzertruppen was in keeping with that tradition! The adaptation by the SS was to try to give then an historical legitimacy where they had none !Originally posted by Garulfo View PostAmazing set !
Were the Pz totenkopf used only during the war or already before ?

This Modification Is Definitely A Wartime Modification. Prior To The War, The N S K K Was Specifically In Charge Of All Civilian Motor Groups, National Motor Safety And Automobile Racing. They Also Provided Drivers For Party Dignitaries. I Only Know Of Two Other Tunics Such As This. In Both Cases, The Owner, Believing The Insignia To Be A Postwar Modification, Removed The Totenkopf. I Would Not Think That N S K K Men Were Involved As Driving Instructors For The Tank Schools Until After The Raising Of Panzer Lehr, Causing A Shortfall In Qualified Instructors.
